Curator of a survey of the life & work of Chinatown’s first native architect, Poy Gum Lee (1900-1968). Trained at Pratt, Lee embarked on a successful career in China during the Republican period, where he was among the first generation of professional Chinese architects. Lee helped define a hybrid architectural modernism that engendered the spirit of Chinese Nationalism. Returning to New York in 1945, Lee’s hand is visible in the majority of mid-century civic and commercial architecture in Chinatown.
