Collaboration to design and pilot an innovative resilient energy & communications network to serve the diverse needs of the Lower East Side community that was severely impacted by Superstorm Sandy; both power and communication were disrupted for days following the storm, trapping many seniors and other vulnerable people on upper floors of elevator buildings. Our New York Prize-funded feasibility study demonstrated that a community microgrid, resilient communications network and power storage was feasible for deployment in the Lower East Side, and would save energy, reduce carbon and provide continuous power and communications in the case of another severe flooding event.
